The Bell Tower Climb Experience: Stunning Views of Florence
Giotto’s Bell Tower has a square base of 15m per side for a total height of about 85 meters.
Inside there are 414 steps to reach the terrace at its top. During the climb, between mullioned and triple lancet windows, you have wonderful views of the city of Florence.
The famous painter Giotto was the architect of the project of the Bell Tower, although at the time of his death (1337) only the lower part had been completed. The work continued under the direction of Andrea Pisano and Francesco Talenti who completed the project.
The external reliefs depict the creation of man and woman, the beginnings of human work, the inventors (according to the Bible) of creative activities such as pastoralism, music, metallurgy, winemaking, the seven planets, the theological and cardinal virtues and, among others, the liberal arts of the Trivium and the Quadrivium.
The bell tower houses 12 bells, 5 of which, the oldest, are disused while the rest are still used for liturgical functions.
