The Hospital of the Innocents is a historic building in the center of Florence. Built in 1400 to a design by Brunelleschi, it is considered one of the first European Renaissance architectures.

The Museum and the Institute of the Innocents belong to it, the latter with nurseries, a kindergarten and family homes to accommodate children in foster care. It is considered not only an Italian but also a European place for the promotion of care and children’s rights.

Book a guided tour of the Hospital of the Innocents: a masterpiece that has been welcoming the children of Florence for 600 years.

Florence: Hospital of the Innocents Guided Tour

The Silk Art, the most important guild of arts and crafts in Florence, has always financed the Spedale.
Under the porch, in front of the main entrance, you can see the “wheel of the exposed” where newborns were left to be entrusted to the care of the staff.

The external porch, a work by Brunelleschi, has a length of 71m and is made of serene stone on white plaster, according to Brunelleschi’s style and, more generally, the Renaissance. Under the porch are visible frescoes and marble busts of the Grand Dukes Cosimo I, Francesco and Ferdinando of the Medici.

The porch leads to the Church of the Hospital, the Church of Santa Maria degli Innocenti. Together with the main altar, made in 600 in semi-precious stones, here is the baptismal font dating back to the end of 300.
