The Gucci Museum was inaugurated in 2011 on the occasion of the brand’s ninetieth anniversary in Florence.
Designed by Frida Giannini, the creative director of Gucci at the time, it was renovated in 2018 by her successor Alessandro Michele in collaboration with the critic and fashion curator Maria Luisa Frisa.
The Museum is located in the historic Palazzo della Mercanzia, which was long the seat of a court called to judge disputes between members of the city’s corporations, including those that brought together textile workers. The place thus evokes the long tradition of Florentine craftsmanship, to which Gucci also belongs.
In 2018, the Museum underwent a significant expansion and today, on its two floors, it houses seven main immersive rooms equipped with videos, each with a chosen theme:
Room n. 1 Horsebit 1953,
Room n. 2 Image-Making,
Room n. 3 Tennis,
Room n. 4 Travel,
Room n. 5 Icons,
Room n. 6 Fashion,
Room n. 7 Foulard.
On the ground floor there is the Bookstore and the Boutique: a unique environment that houses an exclusive selection of books and magazines together with ready-to-wear garments, accessories and Gucci lifestyle items.
The exhibition space is furnished with restored antique furniture that recalls, on the one hand, the mercantile origins of the historic Palace in which the Museum is housed, and on the other, the history of the Maison’s artisanal excellence where Gucci-branded items can be purchased.
In addition to the Museum, there is also the Gucci Osteria and Gucci Giardino: in 2019, less than two years after opening, the Gucci Osteria was awarded a Michelin star for its high-quality cuisine offered to its clientele.
Gucci Giardino is the Maison’s cafe and cocktail bar. It originates from a historic florist who once occupied Piazza della Signoria. For this reason, the venue is inspired by the colors and fragrances of the flowers that give its cocktails the creativity and quality of the ingredients used.
